13 Oct Keeping Up With Industry Changes
As we enter the final quarter of the year, the specialized transportation industry continues to see significant changes across multiple states. Some updates have already taken effect, while others are expected to roll out soon.
Many of these changes are positive developments for carriers, permit services, and shippers. Increased auto-issuance thresholds, expanded travel windows, and improved permitting technology all help streamline the permitting process and create greater operational flexibility. At the same time, new route survey requirements and permit fee adjustments serve as reminders that staying informed remains critical.
While this list is not intended to cover every recent or upcoming change nationwide, these updates could have a substantial impact on route planning, permit procurement, and project timelines.
Nebraska
Effective October 1, 2026, Nebraska implemented new route survey requirements for loads that are:
- 175 feet or greater in length, and/or
- 17 feet or greater in height
Route surveys must now be physically driven and cannot rely solely on mapping tools. Required documentation includes:
- Date and time-stamped photos of all critical turns demonstrating the movement can be completed without leaving the paved roadway, crossing medians, or entering opposing lanes of traffic.
- Date and time-stamped photos of overhead obstructions along the route, including measured structure clearances.
- Documentation of any special maneuvers required at route junctions.
Nebraska has also announced permit fee increases and changes to permit validity periods anticipated to take effect in early 2027:
- Single-trip permits are expected to increase to $50 and be valid for five days.
- Superload permits will begin at $250 with fees increasing based on weight.
Nevada
To improve communication between industry and permit office staff, Nevada is preparing to launch a live chat feature within its online permitting system. Once implemented, users will be able to communicate directly with permit office personnel during business hours.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma is in the early stages of developing a new online permitting system. The state anticipates releasing the platform in the fall of 2027, bringing updated technology and permitting capabilities to users.
Maryland
Maryland has implemented several noteworthy enhancements:
- Auto-issue weight limits increased from 200,000 lbs. to 225,000 lbs.
- Auto-issue length limits increased from 120 feet to 139 feet
- Loads up to 225,000 lbs., 14 feet wide, 14 feet 6 inches high, and 139 feet long now qualify for 24/7 travel
Future increases could potentially raise both auto-issuance and 24/7 travel thresholds to 250,000 lbs.
South Carolina
South Carolina has implemented its auto-issuance program to include qualifying loads up to:
- 130,000 lbs. gross weight
- Maximum axle weight of 20,000 lbs.
- 14 feet wide
- 15 feet high
- 100 feet long
This change should help reduce processing times for many routine overweight and overdimensional movements.
Alabama
A recent update to Regulation 450-3-1-.04, effective September 8, now allows qualifying permitted loads to travel on Sundays, creating additional scheduling flexibility and potentially reducing delivery delays.
West Virginia
West Virginia recently released a new online permitting system that continues to support permit auto-issuance for qualifying loads.
