The FIFA World Cup is set to take place across multiple U.S. cities from June 11 through July 19, bringing millions of spectators, international attention, and significant logistical challenges for the transportation industry. For carriers operating in or near host cities, advance planning will be essential. Traffic congestion, temporary road closures, and oversize/overweight (OS/OW) travel restrictions will vary by location and date.

Host Cities & Match Dates

The following cities will host matches:

  • Atlanta – Mercedes-Benz Stadium: 06/15, 06/18, 06/21, 06/24, 06/27, 07/01, 07/07, 07/15
  • Boston (Foxborough) – Gillette Stadium: 06/13, 06/16, 06/19, 06/23, 06/26, 06/29, 07/09
  • Dallas – AT&T Stadium: 06/14, 06/17, 06/22, 06/25, 06/27, 06/30, 07/03, 07/06, 07/14
  • Houston – NRG Stadium: 06/14, 06/17, 06/20, 06/23, 06/26, 06/29, 07/04

🚨 State-by-State Travel Impacts

We contacted state and local agencies to understand expected restrictions and congestion patterns. Here’s what carriers should know:

California (Los Angeles & Bay Area)

  • No state imposed oversize restrictions currently in effect
  • Expect heavy congestion and local closures around SoFi and Levi’s Stadiums
  • Local curfews apply:
    • 6:00–9:00 AM
    • 3:00–6:00 PM

 

Georgia (Atlanta Area)

  • No state imposed restrictions at this time
  • Carriers are strongly encouraged to avoid Atlanta on game days
  • City officials may implement unannounced rolling closures and traffic controls
  • Road closures:
    • Rhodes St NW between Electric Ave NM to Northside Dr NW 06/12-07/22
    • Martin Luther King Jr Dr SW between Mitchell St NW and Centennial Olympic Park Dr NW on match days

 

Massachusetts (Boston/Foxborough Area)

  • No oversize travel east of I-91 allowed in Boston/Foxborough area
    • 06/13 5:00pm to 06/14 3:00am
    • 06/16 2:00pm to 06/17 12:00am
    • 06/19 2:00pm to 06/20 12:00am
    • 06/23 12:00pm to 10:00pm
    • 06/26 11:000am to 9:00pm
    • 06/29 12:30pm to 10:30pm
    • 07/09 12:00pm to 10:00pm
  • Expect congestion within a 40-mile radius

 

Missouri (Kansas City)

  • No permitted movement within the I-435 loop:
    • Game days as well as the following gameday weekends 07/03–07/05, 07/09–07/11
  • Applies primarily within Platte, Clay, Jackson counties
  • Kansas City road closures
    • Kessler Road and Memorial Drive south of Pershing Lofts 05/11-07/24
    • E 27th Street between Main Street and Warwick Trafficway 06/11-07/11
    • Warwick Trafficway between E 27th Street and E 26th Street 06/11-07/11
    • E 26th Street eastbound between Warwick Trafficway and McGee Trafficway on game days
    • McGee Trafficway southbound between E 26th Street and E 27th Street on game days

 

New York (New York City)

  • New York travel restrictions:
    • No oversize travel in Orange, Rockland, Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties on the following dates:
      • 06/13, 06/16, 06/22, 06/25, 06/27, and 06/30
    • The restriction also incudes the New York State Thruway in the impacted counties.
  • Trucks prohibited in Midtown:
    • From 6 hours before matches
    • Until 3 hours after matches conclude
  • Restricted zone: 30th St to 60th St, Hudson River to East River
  • Additional permit restrictions may still be announced

 

New Jersey (East Rutherford)

  • No permitted moves near MetLife Stadium on event dates
    • Routes impacted include but are not limited to
      • I-676, I-76, I-295, NJ-17, NJ-120, NJ-3

 

Texas (Dallas & Houston)

  • District restrictions may change at any time, carriers are encouraged to frequently review District Permit Restrictions
    • Dallas area restrictions in effect the entire day on 06/14, 06/17, 06/22, 06/25, 06/27, 07/03, 07/06, 07/14
    • No permitted travel for the following Counties/roads

  • Full closures:
    • 4-5 hours before matches
    • 2-3 hours after matches
  • Estimated closure times around Pioneer Square
    • 06/15 8:00am until event is clear
    • 06/19 8:00am until event is clear
    • 06/24 8:00am until event is clear
    • 06/26 4:00pm until event is clear
    • 07/01 9:00am until event is clear
    • 07/06 1:00pm until event is clear

 

Florida (Miami)

  • Local closures may expand in Miami-Dade County as traffic is impacted
    • Closures on game days include but are not limited to
      • Turnpike 2X Ramp and Exit both northbound and southbound
      • NW 199th Street between NW 27th Avenue and NW 14th Court
    • The following will be closed 1 hour after each game begins until postgame traffic clears:
      • NW 27th Avenue between NW 203rd Street and NW 199th Street
      • Turnpike northbound between Golden Glades and 2X Exit
    • Carriers are encouraged to contact local authorities before traveling in the Miami-Dade County area

 

Pennsylvania (Philadelphia)

  • Routes impacted by high traffic: I-95, I-76, SR-291, SR-611, US-1, US-202, I-676
    • Road closures and/or oversize/overweight bans 12:00am 06/05 until 12:00am 07/05 (subject to changed based on traffic impacts)
      • US-1 Northbound between Haverford Ave to Ramp C
      • I-95 Southbound and Northbound between Delaware County and Bucks County
      • US-1 Southbound between Old Lincoln Highway SR-2037 and Rhawn St SR-1014
      • US-1 Northbound between Whitaker Ave SR-1003 and Old Trevose Rd
      • US-202 Southbound between State Line and Brintons Bridge Rd
      • I-76 Eastbound and Westbound between City Line Ave and Passyunk Ave
