CVSA International Roadcheck 2026

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) International Roadcheck is scheduled for May 12–14 and will once again place a concentrated enforcement presence across North America for 72 hours. Dating back to 1988, International Roadcheck is the largest targeted commercial vehicle enforcement initiative, with an average of 15 commercial vehicles inspected every minute during the three-day event. Each year, CVSA selects one driver violation category and one vehicle violation category as areas of emphasis to highlight safety concerns and improve compliance industry-wide.

2026 Driver Focus: Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)

This year’s driver-related focus is on electronic logging devices (ELDs), specifically targeting:

  • Tampering
  • Falsification
  • Manipulation

Inaccurate ELD entries are sometimes the result of misunderstandings related to regulations or available exemptions. However, enforcement agencies note that, in some cases, violations are intentional efforts to conceal hours-of-service (HOS) violations. The data underscores why this focus remains critical. In 2025, there were 58,382 violations related to falsification of duty status, making it the second most-cited driver violation overall. Looking further into the top 10 driver violations reported last year, five were directly related to hours-of-service or ELD compliance.

2026 Vehicle Focus: Cargo Securement

The vehicle focus for this year’s International Roadcheck is cargo securement, an area that presents serious risks when not properly addressed. Improper or inadequate securement can compromise public safety, place drivers at risk, and result in damage or loss of cargo.

In 2025, enforcement officers cited:

  • 18,108 violations for cargo securement that failed to prevent leaking, spilling, blowing, or falling
  • 16,054 violations for improperly secured components or dunnage

These numbers highlight the continued need for carriers and drivers to ensure loads are properly secured according to applicable regulations before and during transport.

Industry-wide Support and Resources

International Roadcheck is sponsored by CVSA in partnership with several regulatory agencies, including:

  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
  • Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)
  • Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators
  • Transport Canada
  • Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport

These organizations encourage motor carriers, drivers, and fleet managers to understand and follow all applicable regulations and have made educational resources available to support compliance efforts. Preparing ahead of International Roadcheck can help minimize violations, reduce downtime, and improve overall safety.

Final Thoughts

International Roadcheck serves as a powerful reminder that safety and compliance are shared responsibilities across the commercial transportation industry. With 2026’s focus on ELD integrity and cargo securement, enforcement officials are spotlighting areas that directly impact road safety, operational reliability, and public trust. Carriers and drivers who take time now to review regulations, audit equipment and records, and correct potential issues will be better positioned to navigate the three-day inspection blitz with confidence. More importantly, proactive preparation helps reinforce safe practices that extend well beyond Roadcheck, supporting a safer and more efficient roadway system year-round.
