“On the Move”: Fishing, Permits and Memorial Day Prep

Minnesota’s Fishing ‘Opener Weekend’ is Set to Begin

Minnesota is known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” which bodes a wide array of opportunities for fishermen and fisherwomen to come and show off their skills. Or, just get lucky if you aren’t a Master Angler.

Speaking from personal experience, I have a distinct childhood connection with fishing.  I grew up in the Pennsylvania Appalachian Mountains and there were a lot of local fishing holes.  Some spots were widely known, and some were coveted by those who knew them (Fish-n-Pay lakes don’t count, and weren’t allowed!).  One thing I do remember about that time is the peacefulness and beauty that came with committing 3 or 4 morning hours to trying your luck.  Fishing was one of the few things that was able to hold my attention at a young age- which was not easy at times.  Upon reflection, my success rate on any outing was probably less than 50%, but the memories that I held on to are immeasurable.

The Minnesota Fishing Opener marks the official start of the state’s fishing season and is a long-standing tradition that draws thousands of anglers to lakes and rivers across the state. Taking place each May, the opener is not only a major recreational event but also one of the busiest travel weekends of the year in Minnesota.

Oregon Streamlines Annual Permits to Simplify Process

In a significant move aimed at simplifying the permitting process for motor carriers, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced a consolidation of its annual permits. The number of permit types will be reduced from 27 to 11, effective May 19, 2025, so be sure to be aware and prepared.

The streamlined system is designed to make it easier for carriers to manage their operations while allowing for more efficient administration within ODOT. Rather than renewing existing permits, carriers will need to purchase a new annual permit beginning on or after May 19, 2025.  “If your current annual permit expires on or after this date, you’ll need to obtain a new one through our online portal, ORION (Oregon Routing Information Online),” ODOT officials stated. “This change will help ensure a smoother and more modernized permitting experience.”

As part of the transition, ODOT has also updated its permit renewal notification process. Carriers may have already begun receiving renewal reminders via ORION. Moving forward, all renewal notices will be sent to the email address on file, replacing previous reminders sent through the U.S. Postal Service.

Officials caution that during this transitional phase, ORION’s data may lag behind the current system. Carriers are advised to disregard any renewal emails for permits they have already renewed. ODOT encourages all carriers to verify that their contact information in ORION is current to ensure continued receipt of important notifications.  Here at Permit America, we are dedicated to staying current and keeping you up to date!

Memorial Day is approaching; a time for remembrance

Originally called Decoration Day after the Civil War, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is now a day to honor and remember military personal who died while serving in the armed forces. This day has such special meaning to us all, as we all have a connection to those that laid down their lives for the protection and security of our great country.  Permit America holds our Country’s service members, past and present, with the utmost respect and regard.
