30 Aug Colorado’s Chain Laws Are Coming!
What does this mean?
If you plan to travel through Colorado any time in the near future, it’s time to dust off the chains! Colorado Department of Transportation Chain Law requires Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) carry chains when traveling on I-70 from milepost 133-259 in both directions starting September 1st, 2024 extending through May 31st, 2025.
If you are a commercial vehicle over 16,000lbs GVW you must carry enough chains to apply to a minimum of 4 drive-wheel tires during this time period. During this time window CDOT may communicate that a ‘Traction Requirement’ has been implemented whereby these chains must physically be applied to the tires, until lifted. See below links for chain station map and tips.
What’s at stake?
- The penalty for not carrying chains between milepost 133-259 of I-70 from September 1st – May 31st is a $50 fine plus a $17 surcharge.
- When ‘Traction and Chain Requirements’ are in effect the penalty for noncompliance is a fine up to $500 plus a $79 surcharge.
- If the vehicle becomes stuck and impedes traffic the fine is $1,000 plus a $157 surcharge.
