Advancing Utility Coordination

Imagine a process where submitting one utility approval request automatically alerts every relevant utility company along your planned route in that state. No more hours spent navigating outdated phone systems, tracking down contact information, or waiting on unreturned calls. For specialized transportation professionals, a streamlined system like this would dramatically improve coordination, efficiency, and safety.

The foundation for such a solution already exists through the National Joint Utility Notification System (NJUNS), a not-for-profit consortium committed to improving communication among utility partners. With active memberships across 34 states, NJUNS provides a centralized online platform that allows utilities to exchange information quickly, clearly, and securely.

So Why Is the Oversize Load Process Still Difficult?

While NJUNS has widespread participation, most states have not yet adopted the NJUNS Oversize Load program, an extension specifically designed to support specialized transportation needs. Currently, Georgia is the only state utilizing this tool for oversize/overweight utility notifications.

Without broader adoption, the potential benefits, faster approvals, better coordination, and fewer project delays will remain largely out of reach for carriers operating across multiple states.

What Can the Industry Do to Help?

To better understand the path forward, we contacted NJUNS directly. Their answer was clear: advocate and educate.

Industry members can help drive progress by:

  • Reaching out to local utility companies or utilities in frequently traveled regions
  • Sharing information about NJUNS and the advantages of the Oversize Load program
  • Promoting safer and more coordinated communication between utilities and specialized carriers

The more awareness and support the program gains, the more likely additional states are to adopt it, and the sooner the industry can benefit from streamlined, standardized utility notifications.

Moving Forward Together

As specialized transportation demands continue to grow, improving utility coordination will be essential for both safety and operational efficiency. NJUNS offers a proven framework, and industry advocacy can help expand its use.
