The Scoop on OD/OW Permits

We recently attended the SC&RA Transportation Symposium in NC, where we had the opportunity to meet with several state officials and gather valuable insights that could be of interest to our OD/OW customers and partners. Please see the information below, and don’t hesitate to reach out to us anytime if you have any questions!

Missouri (MO):

Oversize Overweight Rulemaking Changes will take effective March 30, 2025, 7 CSR10-25.020 Oversize Overweight Permits.

  • Expanded Saturday and Sunday travel accessibility for loads 14′ wide to loads 16′ wide. Existing holiday and tourist area travel prohibitions still apply. CSR10-25.020 (14)(A)1-2;
  • Expanded width threshold for night movement from 10’6″ to 12’6″. 7 CSR10-25.020(10)(F);
  • To increase the length threshold for nighttime travel to allow loads up to but not exceeding one hundred ten feet (110’) in length. CSR 10-25.020(10)(F);
  • Expanded escort requirement for overlength loads from 90′ to 100′. Added escort requirement for loads exceeding 125′ on all highways. 7 CSR 10-25.020(9)(G)2;
  • To promulgate a new escort requirement for overlength loads exceeding one hundred twenty-five feet (125’) on all highways. A gap analysis identified that the existing catalog of regulations did not include a provision for escorts on divided highways for loads of this length;

Louisiana (LA):

Night travel may be approved upon request. While the parameters are a bit unclear, the state official we spoke with mentioned there are no specific limitations. Simply make the request, and approval could be granted (though it’s not guaranteed). In other words, if you don’t ask, you won’t know—so it’s worth giving it a try!

North Carolina (NC):

Have you received a citation in North Carolina recently or frequently travel through the state oversize and/or overweight? If you answered yes, YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE TO DISPUTE, and this information is for you! North Carolina General Statute 20-178.1 states that you have the right to request review of your citation within 30 days of issuance. You might be wondering how much paperwork is involved—don’t worry, it’s almost no effort at all! It’s a simple web form where you’ll need to provide the citation date, type, citation number, your name, contact details, and the reason for your review request. Check it out for yourself: Commercial Vehicle Citation Appeal.

Iowa (IA):

Carriers who infrequently travel through Iowa or rarely haul overweight loads will want to keep a close eye on this pending legislation! Adding weight to your cab card isn’t difficult, but it can be time-consuming and feel unnecessary if you don’t regularly haul overweight loads in Iowa. Originally introduced as SB1043 and recently renamed SF390, this bill will allow a single-trip registration at a rate of $4 per ton for weight exceeding 40 tons, instead of requiring an increase to the cab card registered weight. SF390 also proposes raising the All Systems Annual permits from 12% to 12.5% over the current maximum legal weight, based on the number of axles. You can read the full proposed bill and track its progress here.
