29 Jul FMCSA Warns Carriers of Phishing Scam

Phishing has become one of the most common ways for cyber criminals to deceive individuals into revealing sensitive information.  Phishing is the term used to refer to an attempt to steal usernames, passwords, bank account information, or any data that can be used to steal an identity. Cyber criminals then use this information for profit as well as to launch future attacks. Phishing works by sending an email that appears to be from a legitimate company.  Most emails contain a link requesting the intended target to click so they may update information on their account or to protect their account from a potential threat. Cyber criminals use threatening verbiage to make the target feel they must immediately act by using phrases similar to “you will be required to pay a fine if not completed in 24hrs” or “your account has been compromised please secure your account immediately”.

The FMCSA is warning carriers that an email is fraudulently being sent indicating that it is from one of their employees.  The email is requesting the recipient to provide their SSN, DOT pin, and insurance information.  The scammer is going so far as to require a copy of the recipients drivers license in order to verify identity.  More information on the phishing attack can be found on the FMCSA website.
